Air quality complaints are often linked to insufficient ventilation or problems with a ventilation system. The workplace Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems should provide adequate amounts of conditioned outdoor air based on occupancy rates and activities. Depending on the workplace design and occupancy, a recommended minimum ventilation (volumetric flow) rate should be maintained during workplace occupancy.

Ventilation systems may draw in and circulate contaminants or pollutants within the workplace, from other workplaces or the outdoors. Every component of the HVAC system could be a potential source of contamination. The component could also fail to provide the required air handling or air conditioning function. It is important to evaluate potential ventilation and air quality issues before they become serious problems. The key to avoiding serious problems is prevention. If a ventilation or air quality problem is caught in the early stages, it can usually be resolved at minimal cost.
